Q.  What is the Register of Electors?
   
A The Register of Electors is a listing of persons who are entitled to vote at Local Elections, General Elections, European Parliament Elections and Referenda.
   
Q.  How do I know if my name is on the register?
   
A Check the most current and updated register to see if your name has been added to the register. The register is available for public inspection at all Post offices, Garda stations, Council offices and libraries. Check the register online also at www.checkthregister.ie
   
Q. How do I get my name on the Register?
   
A You have to apply by completing an RFA application form. If you are not on the Live Register which is printed on the 1st of February you can apply to go on the Supplement which is printed before the Local Elections. To be included in the supplement you must be 18 years of age, ordinarily resident at the address at which you wish to be registered, and not already registered as an elector
   
Q. What is the age for voting?
   
A 18 Years of age.
If you will be 18 on or before polling day on the 5th of June you may apply to be included on the Supplement to The Register of Electors and vote at the Local and European Elections.
   
Q. I am 17 and about to turn to 18, am I automatically registered on the Register of Electors?
   
A No you are not. You have to apply to be included by completing a form and giving it to the door to door fieldworker at the time of the annual survey or by sending it in on your Local Authority
   
Q. Can I vote at any polling Station?
   
A No you must vote at the Polling Station to which you are assigned.
   
Q. What happens if I don’t get my polling card?
   
A If you don’t get a polling card and you are on the register you can still go to your polling station and vote.
   
Q. I filled in the census of population form last year, does that put my name on The Register of Electors?
   
A The Census of population is a separate exercise to The Register of Electors and information gathered on the Census of Population form is private and cannot be used to complete The Register of Electors.
   
Q. Are there different categories of voters?
   
A Yes there are four categories of electors: Presidential, Dáil, European and Local Government Elector. A person’s citizenship determines their category and the type of elections at which they may vote as follows:-
Irish Citizen – All elections and referenda,
British Citizens – Dáil, European and Local elections,
Other EU Citizens – European and local elections,
Non EU Citizens – Local Government elections only.
   
Q. Can I be registered at more then one address 
   
A No, Section 11 of the 1992 Act states that a person shall not be registered as an elector more than once in any registration area nor in more than one registration area.
   
Q. I will be on holiday on the 5th of June can I apply for a postal vote?
   
A No, Postal voting is provided in respect of certain categories of person as specified in electoral law.
Members of the Gardaí, Whole time members of the Defence Forces and Irish Diplomats serving abroad and their spouses.
Electors living at home who are unable to vote because of a physical illness or disability,
Electors whose occupation, service or employment makes it likely that they will be unable to vote in person at their local polling station on polling and day and Full time students registered at their home who are living elsewhere while attending an educational institution in the state.
   
Q. I spend most of my time abroad but I have a holiday home in Ireland where I spend some time can I go on the Register?
   
A The application form states where you are ordinarily resident so if you are ordinarily resident in England, you cannot be put on the register
   
Q. My name is spelt incorrectly on the register can this be changed?
   
A. Please notify your local authority and it can be changed for the draft register which will be printed in November.
