Kilkenny County Council is currently chaired by Labour’s Tomás Breathnach.

There are 26 elected representatives consisting of: eleven Fine Gael, eight Fianna Fáil, five Labour, one Independent and one Green Party.
The balance of power is held by Fine Gael and Labour.

Some of the key issues for the council include concerns of committees in the Waterford-Kilkenny boundary areas, loss of major industries in South and North Kilkenny, poor road surfaces and signage.
